With the Calculate Body Fat Percentage tool , you can easily estimate the percentage of body fat in your body. Body fat percentage indicates what proportion of your total body weight consists of fat mass. Unlike BMI, body fat percentage provides more insight into your body composition.

This calculator is suitable for adults and uses a scientifically based formula to quickly and reliably provide an indication of your body fat.

What is body fat percentage?

Body fat percentage indicates what percentage of your body weight consists of fat. A healthy body fat percentage varies by gender and age.

Example:

  • A body fat percentage of 20% means that 20% of your body weight consists of fat.
  • The remaining 80% consists of muscles, bones, organs, and fluids.

Body fat percentage is often used in sports, fitness, and health evaluations.

Why is body fat percentage more important than BMI?

BMI only considers weight and height. It makes no distinction between:

  • fat mass
  • muscle mass

As a result, someone with a lot of muscle mass can have a high BMI but still a low body fat percentage. Body fat percentage therefore gives a more realistic picture of your body composition.

Used formula

This tool uses the Deurenberg formula , a widely used method to estimate body fat percentage based on BMI.

Formula:

Body fat percentage = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × age) − (10.8 × gender) − 5.4

Whereby:

  • gender = 1 for men
  • gender = 0 for women

BMI is automatically calculated based on weight and height.

Healthy fat percentages

Men

  • Essential fat: 2–5%
  • Healthy: 10–20%
  • High: 20–25%
  • Very high: >25%

Women

  • Essential fat: 10–13%
  • Healthy: 18–28%
  • High: 28–35%
  • Very high: >35%

These values are guidelines.
