Calculate BMR

Use the BMR calculator to determine how many calories your body burns each day at complete rest.

Use the BMR calculator to determine how many calories your body burns each day at complete rest. BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate and indicates how much energy is needed for essential bodily functions such as breathing, heart rate and body temperature.

This calculation forms the basis for many other health and nutrition calculators, including calorie needs and weight loss calculations.

What is BMR?

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the minimum number of calories your body needs to stay alive without any physical activity. This energy expenditure occurs even if you were to rest all day.

BMR differs from person to person and depends on:

  • age
  • sex
  • height
  • weight

Formula used

This tool uses the Mifflin-St Jeor formula, which is widely considered one of the most accurate BMR formulas.

Formula:

  • Men
    BMR = 10 × weight + 6,25 × height − 5 × age + 5
  • Women
    BMR = 10 × weight + 6,25 × height − 5 × age − 161

All values are based on:

  • weight in kilograms
  • height in centimetres
  • age in years

When should you use a BMR calculator?

A BMR calculation is useful:

  • as a basis for calculating calorie needs
  • when losing or gaining weight
  • for meal plans
  • for sports and fitness
  • to gain insight into energy expenditure

BMR is often used together with activity factors to calculate total calorie needs.

BMR vs calorie needs

  • BMR: calories at complete rest
  • Calorie needs (TDEE): BMR × activity level

If you eat only your BMR, your weight will usually decrease because your daily movement is not included.

How does this tool work?

You enter:

  1. sex
  2. age
  3. height (cm)
  4. weight (kg)

The tool immediately calculates your BMR and clearly displays the result.

Limitations of BMR

The BMR calculation does not take into account:

  • muscle mass
  • body fat percentage
  • hormonal differences
  • medical conditions

Use the result as a guideline, not as medical advice.

Frequently asked questions
