Calculate flower pot capacity – how much potting soil do you need?

Do you want to know how much potting soil you need for a flowerpot or planter? With this handy tool, you can easily calculate the volume of your pot in liters. This way, you avoid buying too little or too much potting soil. Whether you have a round flowerpot, a tapered pot, or a rectangular planter: with the correct dimensions, you know exactly what to expect.

Most flower pots do not have a standard capacity in liters listed on the packaging. Therefore, it is convenient to calculate the capacity yourself based on the dimensions. By entering the height and diameter (or length and width), this calculator automatically calculates how many liters of potting soil you need.

How do you calculate the volume of a flowerpot?

The volume of a flowerpot is calculated based on its shape. The most common flowerpot is slightly tapered, which means the top is wider than the bottom. In that case, we speak of a truncated cone. For straight pots, you use the cylinder formula, and for planters, a simple length × width × height calculation.

Our tool does this automatically for you. You only need to enter the correct measurements in centimeters, and the calculator converts this into liters of potting soil.

How many liters of potting soil do you need?

The result of the calculation is displayed in liters. This is exactly the amount of potting soil needed to completely fill the pot. In practice, it is wise to take a few factors into account:

  • Drainage layer : a layer of hydro granules is often placed at the bottom of the pot. This means you need approximately 10% less potting soil.
  • Air and root space : plants need room to grow, so slightly rounding upwards is wise.
  • Bags of potting soil : potting soil is usually sold in bags of 20, 40, or 70 liters.

With this tool, you can immediately see how many bags of potting soil you need, so you buy exactly enough.

Examples

  • A flower pot 30 cm high and 30 cm in diameter holds approximately 21 liters of potting soil.
  • A large planter measuring 80 × 30 × 30 cm has a capacity of 72 liters.
  • A tapered pot has slightly less capacity than a straight pot with the same top diameter.

By calculating this in advance, you avoid unnecessary costs and lugging around extra bags.

Why use this tool?

  • ✔ Quickly and easily calculate the volume in liters
  • ✔ Suitable for multiple shapes of flower pots
  • ✔ Immediate insight into required potting soil
  • ✔ Includes calculation of the number of bags
  • ✔ Handy for garden, balcony, and houseplants

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the calculation? The calculation is very accurate as long as you enter the correct dimensions. Small deviations in shape or edge thickness usually have little impact.

Do I need to fill the pot completely? No, you often use a drainage layer at the bottom. This means you need slightly less potting soil.

What if my pot has an unusual shape? Choose the shape that is closest. In most cases, that gives a good estimate.
